Update On Evolving TSA Rules Since the Christmas Northwest Airlines Flight 253
Dec 31st, 2009 by admin
The new regulations keep evolving, since an individual on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day set off a device and was subdued by passengers and crew. Here’s a press release from TSA that indicates the pilots on each aircraft do have flexibility in how the new regulations are interpreted. “During flight, passengers may be asked to follow flight crew instructions, such as stowing personal items, turning off electronic equipment and remaining seated during certain portions of the flight.”
Considering reports from passengers who have flown during the past week, these rules are being interpreted differently. For example. one passenger related he was not even allowed to read the airline magazine during the last hour of the flight, while others said they were able to keep headphones on. We all know, by now, to allow extra time to go through security, but adventure travelers checking sports gear, such as skis or golf clubs,or even walking poles inside a suitcase, shouldn’t be surprised to see that their luggage has been searched. Even before Christmas Day, upon opening our golf clubs and ski bags we have found TSA notices indicating that our sports gear was searched.
