A Wisconsin man found out what it takes for a depression to translate to utter joy, at least that is how he felt as he came across a buried treasure containing bill notes from the depression era. To say that something good did finally come out of the phrase ‘depression era’ may be a bit of a pun but that is exactly what happened to Dan Deming.
Dan had already heard of the rumors of a buried treasure on his farm for quite a while as did the many other residents of that area. Dan Deming had made a few half hearted attempts to search for the treasure on his own but none of them yielded anything. So while he was tearing down this 100 year old rickety shed on this farm, a box tumbled out. The old box was found to contain about $1700 in depression era bills, with some of them marked out as ’silver certificate’ on the top. The markings made it obvious to Dan that the bills were for real and not some play money. In addition to the bills, there were a few newspaper scraps that were used to tally up the money. So Dan knew that he had found about $1700 roughly and that they must have been buried during 1928-1934 period.
But the bad news is that the bills had been buried for quite a while with the result being that most of the bills were badly damaged, whether it was on account of water seepage or some other cause. So instead of selling these notes to a collector on account of the damage, Dan has forwarded them to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and utilize any payment received from them to build a new shed. Dan is hopeful of finding out more treasure on his property and one can say that depression has finally given him a reason to hope, would wonders never cease?
